Natural Cleaning Solutions

Instead of toxic chemical products, you can choose safer earth-friendly options at your health food store, or make your own natural cleaning products easily with ingredients from your kitchen.

  • If you have a septic tank, chemical laundry products can wipe out the bacteria necessary to make the tank work properly.

All-purpose cleaner         Equal parts white vinegar and water.

Kitchen & Bath cleaner    Baking soda, or washing soda.  Freshen with a few drops of antiseptic lemon, lavender or pine essential oil.

Laundry detergent          1/3 cup washing soda plus 1 ½ cups natural soap flakes.  Add ½ cup borax for whitening and water softening.  Reduce the amount of cleaner needed by using magnetic laundry disks or wash-balls (can be used in dishwasher too).  Add five to 10 drops of tea tree oil to the wash water for disinfection.

Fabric softener              Add ¼ cup baking soda to the wash cycle, or ¼ cup vinegar to the rinse cycle.

Dryer sheets                  Add a small wet towel to the dryer a few minutes before the end of the cycle to eliminate static cling.

Pot scrubber                   Scour with baking soda.

Oven cleaner                   Sprinkle oven with water, then cover with baking soda, leave overnight.  Wipe clean in the morning.

Carpet cleaner                Sprinkle cornstarch on dry carpet.  Leave on for five minutes, then vacuum.
